Kitchen remodeling is the most requested type of home renovation project. The reasons are obvious – the kitchen is the where you cook, gather with family and entertain. Quite simply, it is where everyone wants to be. If you are considering a kitchen remodel, take a look at the trends that will last and some that are fun, but may not be around for long.
White Is Here To Stay
In the kitchen, white cabinets, counter tops and tile give a crisp, clean look that works with a range of styles, from streamlined and contemporary to refined and traditional. And best of all, white can be paired with a wide variety of accent colors. White is definitely here to stay.
Gray Is Still Going Strong
Gray has quickly become a favorite color for cabinets. With a variety of different tones, gray can skew both warm and cold, making it easy to pair with a variety of different backsplash designs, countertop materials, and appliance finishes. However, unlike white, gray may not be here to stay, so you might not want to do your whole kitchen in gray. If you love gray, but are worried it won’t stay use it more as an accent color.
Open Shelving – Love It Or Hate It
Don’t think open shelving is for you? Think again. Open shelves can make your kitchen look more spacious. When done right, open shelving does double duty as both storage and decor in the kitchen. It makes locating and grabbing often used dishes and utensils a breeze. It can create a brand new look for things you already own. Perhaps the best part about open shelves is that you can use your plates, cookbooks, vases, plants and more to add style to your kitchen. This a trend you either love or hate.
Mixing Metals Is Not For The Timid
Mixing metal finishes gives any room more interest, but it can be hard to get out of the matchy-matchy rut. If you want to jump on this new trend, but are unsure what to do, try mixing only 2 to 3 metals that are guaranteed to work well together. You can’t go wrong mixing nickel with brass or gold. Combining silver, gold, brass and iron looks great if you are feeling daring. And, black goes with everything! Rather than trying to equally distribute different metals, choose a dominant metal and use the rest as accents. Separate metals by height. For instance, use one metal for lighting fixtures and another for cabinet hardware. Or, use the same metal for faucets and another for mirrors. Follow the rule of spreading the dominant metal throughout the room and you can’t go wrong.
Quartz Countertops Are A New Favorite
Quartz has become the new favorite material for kitchen countertops. Homeowners love the consistent appearance, durability and variety of colors and patterns. Unlike granite or marble, these kitchen counters aren’t pure natural stone which means manufacturers can guarantee quality and predictable performance. Many of the new quartz countertops mimic the look of natural substances with subtle veins and striations — which gives the material some movement. There are also now more finishes. In addition to the smooth and shiny quartz you’re probably familiar with, you can achieve a softer appearance — with honed or suede-like finishes — that have a brushed feel. Quartz countertops are here to stay.
Reclaimed Wood Is Trending
If you are a fan of HGTV, you have seen a lot of reclaimed wood used in new kitchens. But why, how and where should you use it? In the kitchen, there are plenty of fantastic opportunities, from floors and cabinets to island accents and floating shelves, all the way up to the ceiling. Wood provides a striking contrast to any paint color. It also adds age and character to any kitchen. However, this might be a trend that may not be here to stay. Unless you absolutely love it, use it in places that are easy to redo like on open shelves, the front on a kitchen island or a table.
